The living room is usually the place we use most in our homes. It’s where everyone chills out after a long day and the best memories are often made with family and friends when we’re comfortable and relaxed.
If you’re starting to think about upgrading your living room, we’ve put together some tips to help you focus on particular areas that will have the most impact and help you keep within your budget.
Wall colour
Paint is a quick and cost-effective way of updating any room. The first step is deciding what colour palette you’d like to use as this will affect the feel and mood of the whole room. Popular shades this year have been earthy tones like dusky pink and clay which offer a subtle and warmer alternative to pale colours such as magnolia or white.
If you’d like to inject a pop of colour, a feature wall with either stunning wallpaper or a bold paint colour can transform a room and provides a focal point. Berry reds, burnt oranges and luxe greens provide a stunning contrast to a paler, earthy colour.
Statement artwork or mirror
What you hang on your walls can have a huge impact as well. Statement artwork or an exquisite mirror can change the look and feel of a room. A lot of our clients see stunning results using big, bold pieces that catch the eye and add interest to a wall.
A large, ornate mirror placed opposite or next to a window will help to flood a darker room with light. It will also help to make a smaller living room feel bigger and more spacious. They work particularly well above a fireplace.
Use a rug to upgrade your living room
Walls aren’t the only place you can inject some colour and personality into your living room. A statement rug is an effective way of adding some colour, texture and pattern to a room. You can go bold and bright or muted and subtle, whatever suits your mood and that of the room.
They have a big impact and can add some attention to your design, as well as being a practical addition to keep your feet warm during the cold winter months. Rugs come in all shapes, sizes, colours and materials so take your time researching which one will fit best in your design.
Soft furnishings
When you’ve got a neutral shade on your walls, adding colours with the soft furnishings is a quick and easy way to add interest and texture when you’re upgrading your living room. Cushions and throws are relatively inexpensive and can even be changed to complement each season.
Bright and vibrant pinks add an element of fun while deep blues and greens create a feeling of luxury. Experiment with different textures and fabrics, mixing busy patterns with luxurious velvets for your cushions and throws to help lift a plain sofa. Using the same fabric or having a similar colour palette for your window dressings brings a design together.
Lighting
Having several different sources of lighting is not only a practical part of any design, but it’s also the opportunity to try different things. A dimmer switch for your main ceiling fitting lets you alter the strength of the light to suit your mood. Table lamps light up dark corners of the room whilst fairy lights add some sparkle.
A statement light fitting, lampshade or string of lights lets you add some fun to your design. There are so many different types of light on the market from traditional to exquisite glass and crystal that can be used to create a brilliant contrast in your design features.
